Published jointly by the USAID-funded BASICS II Project, Environmental Health Project (EHP), UNICEF and the World Bank, the document describes an EHP-BASICS initiative that brought together soap companies, government ministries, NGOs, and the media in three Central American countries to promote handwashing to prevent diarrhoeal disease through a coordinated communication campaign . The results of the initiative include improvements in handwashing behavior associated with reductions in diarrhoeal disease, leveraging of significant additional resources for public health, and sustained involvement of the private sector partners in public health promotion.
