World
Summit on Sustainable Development, September 2002
A full day of activities was organized in the World Bank pavilion
at the WaterDome at the World
Summit on Sustainable Development in South Africa, on
September 2. Considerable mileage was gained. A number of
world leaders such as Ronie Kasals, South Africa Minister
of Water, Claire Short, former British Minister for International
Development, Mrs Kofi Annan, HE the Prince of Orange and James
Wolfensohn, the President of the World Bank did symbolic demonstration
of washing their hands with soap and endorsed the initiative.
One of the great achievements was the wide level of acceptance
of the handwashing cause given its relation to many of the
Millennium
Development
Goals
(MDGs), linking water and sanitation to health outcomes, and
also, its focus on forming partnerships for development. See
presentations.
